The city of Pu'er City (formerly known as Simao, renamed in 2007) is under the jurisdiction of the county, in the southwest of the province, and neighboring Myanmar in the west. The county seat is 625 kilometers from Kunming, the provincial capital, and 225 kilometers from Pu'er City. It is connected to the Shan State of Myanmar and has a border line of 89.33 kilometers. In 2010, there were 91,300 people in Ximeng County and 83,900 ethnic minorities. In 2013, the total production value (current price) of Ximeng County was 788.83 million yuan, an increase of 13.3% over 2012.
