Autumn getaway in Yunnan

云南秋韵

Autumn’s crisp air and bright colors makes Yunnan an idyllic place during October. The diversity of the climate gives rise to a ravishing autumnal vista of Yunnan highlighted with color palettes, mimicking a series of enchanting oil paintings, be it abold monochromatic rendering or a multicolor mosaic canvas, fascinates one with charm that all would yearn for.

十一月的云南，依然秋高气爽，风轻云淡。气候多样性给了云南的秋天梦幻般绚丽色彩，仿佛画家笔下的一幅幅油墨重彩，红橙黄绿青蓝紫，或单色夸张渲染，或多色柔美融合，无不令人心驰神往。

Black-necked cranes

黑颈鹤

Black-neckedcrane, the only crane living on plateau area in China, is one of the latest discovered cranes. As a species under first class national protection and a kind of bird in urgent need of global salvation, the crane is listed in the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora. About 800 blacknecked cranesmigrate to Northeast Yunnan’s Huize County every winter, making Huize one ofthe globally largest wintering sites for black-necked cranes.

黑颈鹤，生活在中国高原地区的唯一鹤类，人类发现最晚的鹤类之一，中国一级重点野生保护动物，被列入《濒危野生动植物种国际贸易公约》，是全球性急需拯救的鸟类。冬天，近800 只黑颈鹤飞到会泽过冬，使这里成为世界最大的黑颈鹤越冬地之一。

The journey of salt in Mijing ancient village

Mijing Country is located in southeast of Misha Township, Jianchuan County, Dali Bai Autonomous Prefecture. In history, it was once an important base of salt producing in the west of Yunnan, with clusters of salt stoves scattered along both banks of Misha river. Moreover, “There were a minor fair every three days and a major fair every five days,” thronged with merchants and visitors.Nowadays, the eighth day of the fourth month of the lunar year is said to be as the time to meet with the Divine Mother of Salt each year, when locals perform ox dance, dragon dance and lion dance in commemoration of the Divine Mother of Salt and pray for favorable climate and good harvests of the following year.

弥井村位于大理州剑川县弥沙乡东南部。历史上，弥井曾是滇西一带产盐的旧都，弥沙河两边灶城拔地而起，且“三天一小集，五天一大集”，商旅云集。如今，每年农历四月八是一年一次的盐神母的会期，人们表演耍牛、舞龙、耍狮等纪念盐神母，并祈求来年风调雨顺、五谷丰登。

Nosketches, no facsimiles. A quick glance captures the distinctive traits of hiscustomer like a camera shutter freezing the moment. Wang Yuan, a silhouette paper-cutting genius, works his scissors to cut silhouettes for his customers out of simple monotonous black waxed-papers with a single steady and continuous cut.

一张张朴素单调的黑色蜡光纸，剪刀旋转出几个曲线，鼻子和嘴巴一下子清晰起来，然后向里一收，剪刀在颈部结尾。不用临摹，不用笔画，抬眼一看，人物的特征就全部记在心里。一剪子下去，从容不迫，一气呵成。汪元手里的剪刀，几乎等同于照相机的快门。

Bronze “Ares”

青铜 “战神”

Located in Jiangchuan county seat, Lijiashan Bronze Museum has relatively complete exhibits for a building of its type in China, among which is a treasure of the Bronze Drum Decorated with Three Knights, which has three riding figures symbolizing Ares, the patron saints of the Dian people, and an ox symbolizing wealth and power depicted on the drumhead. Guide Deng Jie has to go back to work immediately after lunch since tourists keep coming, even on workdays to see the collection of bronze relics, especially Bronze Drum Decorated with Three Knights.

李家山青铜器博物馆，是国内功能较齐全的青铜器博物馆，坐落在江川县城内。即便是工作日，李家山青铜器博物馆也游客不断，讲解员邓婕在办公室吃了午饭便马上投入工作，诸多青铜器文物中，邓婕重点介绍了三骑士铜鼓。“它是我们博物馆收藏的镇馆之宝。”铜鼓以极其写实的方式在盖子上刻画了三座骑俑及一头牛，骑俑显然是滇人的战神和保护神，牛象征着财富和权力。

Yunnan opera: A history of 200 years

滇剧：200 年剧韵流长

The audiences heard their familiar Yunnan vernacular and immersed themselves in indigenous customs while watching the exquisite performance. Yunnan opera’s charm beckons plentiful audiences. Elder locals reminisced that watching Yunnan opera in familiar dialect in teahouses with a cup of jasmine tea, peanuts, or a glass of Yunnan wine was a popular pastime in old times.

一场精致的演出，观众听着熟悉的云南本土方言，沉浸在本地风土人情中；生长于云南这块土地上的滇剧，散发出浓浓的红土馨香，让他们驻足停留。在更早的岁月中，在老昆明人的记忆里，一杯茉莉花茶、一碟水煮花生或者来一杯滇王老窖，坐在老城区的茶馆里，听着滇剧，可其乐陶陶一下午。

Yanshan Agate

砚山玛瑙

Yanshan agate is a specialty of Yanshan County, so named after the shape of towering mountains like an inkstone (Chinese pinyin: Yan). Discovered in the 1980s, Yanshan agate is primarily distributed in the lower Luchaichong mining area, which is eluvium-talus-type agate deposit. According to experts, agate as a paragenous mineral comes with bentonite, so lots of raw stones have been unearthed during the bentonite mining. In addition, the eluvial layer near Zima Bentonite Mine of Yanshan is also dotted with agates with substantial reserves.

砚山玛瑙，产自于因“山势颇秀，其形如砚”而得名的云南省砚山县。砚山玛瑙发现于上世纪八十年代，主产区为下芦柴冲矿区，属残坡积型玛瑙矿床。专家考证，玛瑙与膨润土伴生，在采集膨润土时有大量玛瑙原矿被挖出，另在砚山县子马膨润土矿附近的残坡积层中，也有零星玛瑙分布，储量巨大。

Qujing-style hodgepodges — the feast of a single dish

曲靖独菜 一菜成席

In the old brands among the restaurants in Qujing, there are quite a few restaurants that have become well-known for just one dish. For example, stewed mutton in an earthen pot over a slow fire, Zhujie braised old duck, braised chicken with bean curd balls, braised chicken with potato, Zhanyi peppery chicken, Meiyao chicken, stewed chicken with pickled chili, Fuyuan stewed pettitoes with pickled vegetables, Xiaojiezi mutton, boiled fish fillets in spicy soup, deep-fried fish with chili sauce, Hongtuqiang lamb hot pot and Shizong beef soup. All of these restaurants have been in business for adozen or several decades, dedicated to only one dish; therefore, Qujing is also called as the Hometown of Hodgepodges.

曲靖的老牌食铺，靠一菜成名的不少。文火砂锅羊肉、珠街老鸭子、圆子鸡、洋芋鸡、沾益辣子鸡、煤窑鸡、泡椒鸡、富源酸菜猪脚、小街子羊肉、糊辣鱼、酱水鱼、红土墙大羯羊、师宗牛汤锅……这些食铺在开店至今的十几年甚至几十年来，坚持做好一道菜，曲靖也因此被称作“独菜之乡”。
