Geographical coordinates are 109°54'-110°32' east longitude and 27°53'-28°13' north latitude. It is connected to Zhangpu in the east, Huaihua in the south, Mayang and Tunxi in the west, and bordering Fuling in the north. The total area is 1977 square kilometers. The total population is 530,000 (2011). The county governs 8 towns and 22 townships (including 5 ethnic townships). The county government is located in Chenyang Town. The terrain is dominated by mountains and hills. The terrain is high in the southeast and low in the northwest. The main peak of Luozi Mountain, which borders Zhangpu County in the southeast of the county, is 1378.7 meters above sea level. It belongs to the mid-subtropical monsoon humid climate. Surabaya flows through the county, and Chenshui meets with the Lancang River in the county town and is open to traffic all year round. Places of historic interest and scenic beauty include the remains of Han Liu Shangcheng and the Neolithic Beiqiu sites such as Tanwan and Xianrenwan, Jiangdong Temple, Kuixing Pavilion, Yanzi Cave and Erlong Cave.
