Located in the western part of Hunan Province, northwest of Huaihua City, it is located in the Mayang River Basin. The geographical coordinates are 109°24′-110°06′ east longitude and 27°32′-28°01′ north latitude. It is adjacent to Chenxi County in the east, Hecheng District and Qijiang County in the south, Tongren City in Guizhou Province in the west, and Tunxi County and Fenghuang County in the north. The total area is 1561 square kilometers. The total population is about 400,000 people (2013). The county governs 6 towns and 17 townships: Gaocun Town, Jinhe Town, Jiangkou Market Town, Yanmen Town, Lanli Town, Lujiaping Town, Guogongping Township, Changtan Township, Tuochong Township, Handan Township, Wenchang Gexiang, Daqiaojiang Township, Shujia Village Township, Longjiabao Township, Tanjiazhai Township, Shiyangshao Township, Chestnut Tree Township, Gudap Township, Lancun Township, Liping Township, Luxikou Township, and Pingxi Township, Huangsang Township. The county government is stationed in Gaocun Town. The terrain is slightly squatting, with the south, west and north sides being high, the middle part being low, and the east facing obliquely. There are many peaks and peaks in the territory. The deposits include copper, lead, iron, zinc, stone coal, limestone and so on. The crops are mainly rice, which produces citrus, sun-cured tobacco, peanuts, tung oil, tea oil, watermelon, soybeans, kiwi and so on. Jiaoliu Railway, National Highway 209 and Provincial Highway 308 pass through.
